Thanks again to Phillis for pointing me in the direction of Jessica Lichtenstein’s fetish art. An exhibition of her anime-inspired figures was on show throughout January and early February at New York’s Gallery Nine 5. The doll-like statuettes, made from PVC and resin, are shown in various states of dominance and submission in each carefully-posed installation of the “Undressed” exhibition, and reflect Lichtenstein’s fascination with the ways in which femininity can be represented. The artist said: “I love looking at the way women have been depicted from classic times to modern times- from Botticelli´s rotund figures, to Fragonard´s playful yet overly ornate figures, to Ingres´s elongated Odalisque, to Picasso’s abstract shapely patterns. They all show one theme -women and their sexuality- yet it is expressed in so many different styles.”
