Don’t get me wrong. I genuinely admire Harriet Harman. The problem is, I’m of the opinion that her policies on sex workers are misguided, however noble her intentions may be. As well as being Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Harman is Minister for Women and Equality and has, quite rightly, waged war on trafficking and exploitation in the sex trade. Unfortunately though, new laws perceive little distinction between the most harmful end of the industry and a large number of perfectly happy, independent, professional fetish and burlesque performers. As a result, women who actively choose to celebrate their sexuality in what they do for a living – women who, in most cases, consider themselves to be Feminists – have found themselves unfairly penalised. This week, a burlesque troupe staged a protest outside Harman’s home with photographer and campaigner Ben Westwood. Feel free to click the thumbnail below to see the photos at Anorak.co.uk.
